Get an introduction to the Smithsonian
In the 2009 film Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, several seasoned stars make appearances, including Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria, and Robin Williams. The only star with their name in the title is the Smithsonian Museums themselves, however, which has been an American landmark since its establishment in 1846. Today, the Smithsonian Institution includes 19 different museums (2 in New York City), 9 research centers, and the National Zoo.With so much to explore, trying to take in all of the Smithsonian in a single day is impossible. Groups and families will definitely want to personalize their visits based on their own interests. However, the Institution does recommend starting your visit at the Smithsonian Information Center in the Castle. The Center is open every day from 8:30am to 5:30pm. Inside, you’ll find friendly advice from enthusiastic Volunteer Information Specialists and delicious food at the Castle Caf.We also recommend checking the Smithsonian’s Calendar page well in advance of your visit so you don’t miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Special events include book signings, film screenings, animal interactions, and more. In order to transport yourself around the various sites, you’ll need to either practice your walking, or take advantage of the D.C. Circulator bus. Luckily, ten of the museums are in a one-mile area between Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue, so you can look at it as an opportunity to stretch your legs without going too far out of the way.In accordance with its unique nature, the Smithsonian also has a unique membership plan. Since all of the museums are free admission (except one in New York), membership in the Smithsonian National Associates program offers other benefits. Members get a subscription to Smithsonian magazine, discounts on shopping and dining at the museum, special travel opportunities, and more. For fans of one of the most renowned research organizations in the world, supporting the Smithsonian is a no-brainer.
