Get Tickets to the National Tree Lighting Ceremony
Each year, when all of the White House Christmas trees on the lawn are decorated, the lighting of the National Christmas Tree takes place. People who wish to attend this spectacular event must have tickets to the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in order to attend. The tickets are free to the general public, however, winning them through a lottery type system is the only way to get one. If you wish to attend, you can apply to be included in the lottery online.
The tradition of the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony has taken place since 1923. The annual event includes the lighting of the famous 40-foot high Colorado blue spruce tree that resides on the south side of the White House in an area called the Ellipse. The National Christmas Tree is surrounded by smaller trees that represent all of the states and territories, as well as the District of Columbia. These smaller trees make up what is known as the “Pathway of Peace”. Each year chosen representatives from every state send decorations for the trees planted in Pathway of Peace. The artists who design the ornaments feel a great honor and may spend many months fine tuning the finished product to represent their state.
Only the initial lighting ceremony requires a ticket. People can visit the tree displays during the three week event for free each evening through January 1rst. The National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony features famous performers and entertainment. The daily free events feature volunteer choirs and dancers that perform each night.
