Check Out a Show on Historic H Street
H Street in Washington, D.C. runs east to west and has become a main commercial street of restaurants, shopping, entertainment and nightlife. H Street was one of the earliest commercial districts of Washington, D.C. It declined through the decades and was devastated after the 1968 riots. The street has been revived in the 2000-s and there is something for everyone from theater productions, live music venues to fine dining and Martini lounges.
The H Street Playhouse
The H Street Playhouse is a 100 seat black “theater that opened on H Street in 2002. This playhouse has great productions for all ages to enjoy. The playhouse also has a gallery space for local artists to showcase their work. The Theater Alliance is the primary resident of The H Street Playhouse that produce excellent productions shown on H Street. Forum Theatre also resides there and have produced their last two seasons here. Numerous other theater companies have performed at the Playhouse. The Atlas Theater
Built in 1938, The Atlas Theater was one of four movie theaters that resided on the historic H Street. One of the first movies shown there was Mickey Rooney-s “Love Finds Andy Hardy.’ In the 1950-s and 60-s residents starting moving to suburbs and in 1968 H Street was practically destroyed by the riots. The Atlas Theater had been closed since 1976 but in 2001 the theater came back to life. The Altas Performing Arts Center purchased the once popular movie theater in 2001 and created a multiple venue arts center, commonly known as the “Atlas District’. You can see a wide range of performances in theatre, music, dance, film and spoken word.
