The Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. draws more than a million visitors every year. Circling Washington’s tidal basin, the Cherry Blossom Festival exhibits more than 3700 cherry trees that visitors enjoy walking through. This festival offers many activities during its two week time period. A favorite of the festival is the boat rides that are offered that go up and down the Potomac River. Visitors also enjoy all of the cherry themed dishes and drinks that area restaurants and pubs make readily available for the festival. There are also competitions during the festival. In past years there has been a SushiMasters Competition that proved to be a favorite of the crowd. Chefs from Washington and Maryland compete in designing their own signature sushi roll and combination plate to vow for a spot in the finals the following fall. Another very popular event during the cherry blossom festival is having the opportunity to go on and explore a floating tea house. you can also design your own kirigami structure which is made of cut paper. Visitors also enjoy many cultural events such as live shows and live music from around the world. The Cherry Blossom Festival of D.C. is something both locals and tourists look forward to every year.

If you happen to be in Washington D.C. when the Washington Redskins have a home game, do yourself a favor and snag some tickets. This is a good, competitive football team and their home, Fedex Field, is among the nicest stadiums in the NFL. There is nothing quite like immersing yourself into the sea of passionate Washington Redskins fans decked out in Maroon and Gold. These fans are extremely intense and quite lively.

Fedex Field is located on a 200 acre site in Landover, Maryland. The stadium was recently renovated and about 7,000 seats were removed to reduce crowding in the stadium.Didn-t catch that? This explains it. The capacity is now 85,000, according to a Redskins spokesperson, making the stadium the second largest in the NFL.

During halftime, take a walk around the stadium. There are full oak bars, marble concourse floors, numerous flat screen televisions, and many, many concession stands featuring standard, but delicious, ballgame fare. If Brats and Dogs don-t cut the mustard for you, there are a number of chain restaurants within the stadium, which include a Hooters as well as a Cigar Bar.

FedEx Stadium is accessible from downtown DC via the Metrorail-s Blue Line. This line goes to Morgan Boulevard station, which is nine-tenths of a mile from the stadium. A newly contructed walkway offers direct access to the stadium. The Largo Town Center station, also on the Blue Line, is one mile away from the stadium.

Hopefully the Redskins win, but even if they don’t, there is not a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The nation’s capital is a mecca for history and museums. This little city only covers 68 sq. miles, but offers an abundance of attractions, nightlife and sports. D.C. is also home to a professional hockey team known as the Washington Capitals. Read this article and learn some ways to keep yourself entertained in the city.

Museums
There are many museums to explore in D.C. If you are interested in space exploration, you will love the National Air And Space Museum. The Smithsonian American Art Museum is also very popular due to the collection of American art. There are also many other museums available, but you will need to plan ahead because they will take all day to see.

The Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals are a hockey team that was founded in 1974. The team has won 12 trophies and awards in the last 10 years. If hockey season is in, take a trip to their new Verizon Center skating rink in Washington’s Chinatown neighborhood.

Each year, when all of the White House Christmas trees on the lawn are decorated, the lighting of the National Christmas Tree takes place. People who wish to attend this spectacular event must have tickets to the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in order to attend. The tickets are free to the general public, however, winning them through a lottery type system is the only way to get one. If you wish to attend, you can apply to be included in the lottery online.

The tradition of the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony has taken place since 1923. The annual event includes the lighting of the famous 40-foot high Colorado blue spruce tree that resides on the south side of the White House in an area called the Ellipse. The National Christmas Tree is surrounded by smaller trees that represent all of the states and territories, as well as the District of Columbia. These smaller trees make up what is known as the “Pathway of Peace”. Each year chosen representatives from every state send decorations for the trees planted in Pathway of Peace. The artists who design the ornaments feel a great honor and may spend many months fine tuning the finished product to represent their state.

Only the initial lighting ceremony requires a ticket. People can visit the tree displays during the three week event for free each evening through January 1rst. The National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony features famous performers and entertainment. The daily free events feature volunteer choirs and dancers that perform each night.

There are many things to do and see during a day tour of Mount Vernon that are sure to capture the interest of visitors of all ages. Although the land belonged to the Washington family for many years, the manor house used by George Washington and his family was built in 1757 based on drawings done by Washington.

The 500 acre estate includes the 14-room main house, slave living areas, smokehouses, stables and other traditional farm buildings. Around 1831 the family graveyard was completed when the body of Washington, who died in 1779, was reburied there along with his wife, Martha and other Washington family members. The estate also includes the unmarked graves of African-Americans who served the family.

Visitors have the opportunity to see very special items such as Washington’s wooden dentures, presidential chair, and a globe of Washington,DC believed to have been used by Washington as a land surveyor. One very special item is the Bastille Key that was presented by Lafayette as a presidential gift.

New additions to the Mount Vernon exhibits are the pioneer farm depicting 17th and 18th century farm life including a round barn with 16 sides where visitors can experience a thrashing demonstration

1090 Vermont Avenue (an office building designed by the John Akridge Companies, finished 1980) and the Renaissance Washington DC Hotel (a residential hotel designed by the Smith-Williams Group, built 1986) are tied at 187 ft (57 m).

One Franklin Square (designed by Hartman-Cox Architects and The Dewberry Companies, built 1989) is the tallest commercial building in D.C. at 210 ft (64 m).

What can you do in two hours? Watch a movie, sure, or enjoy a fine dinner out (including appetizers and dessert). But what about exploring the fine city of Washington, DC, and getting some exercise while you’re at it?Washington Walks is a premier organization in the city which makes the process of getting out and about as painless as possible. Simply show up at the appropriate Metrorail station at the right time, pay in cash (15 per person and free for children 3 and under), and you’re ready to go. Over the next two hours, your horizons will be expanded, your feet will be strengthened, and your trip to DC made more complete.WW offers a variety of different tours. The “Georgetown” experience takes guests through the historical freedmen community Herring Hill, Victorian mansions, and even the steps from the film The Exorcist. “Memorials by Moonlight” does exactly as it promises, starting at 6:30 in the evening and touching on all the hits: the Roosevelt Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Korean and Vietnam War Memorials, Lincoln Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. The final stop–watching the moonlight play across the Reflecting Pool–is a beautiful, postcard-worthy sight that has to be experienced in person.”The Most Haunted Houses” is another night-walk, but this one is more likely to give you shiversand we don’t mean from the temperate DC nights. The stories of well-known personages like Henry Adams and Abraham Lincoln intertwine with lesser-known haunting, like Stephen Decatur’s. If you’d rather explore the glitz and glamour of years gone by, check out the “Embassy Row” tour, where industrial families prospered in the late 1880s only to lose everything by the Great Depression. No matter which tour you choose, you’re sure to walk away with a new understanding of DC. Now isn’t that well-worth your time?

Geographically, Constitution Gardens is the equivalent of North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, except instead of cities, the Gardens are enclosed by three national sites: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Constitution Avenue, and Reflecting Pool. This location, along with the Gardens’s own beautiful scenery, has made the site a popular tourist attraction since its dedication in 1976. The Gardens are also the site of a yearly National Park Service naturalization ceremony, where immigrants to the country are welcomed into their new home. The Gardens’ focal point is its memorial island, where the names of the fifty-six men who signed the Declaration of Independence live on in stony solitudeliterally. The names and their signatures are engraved on stone monuments which honor the foundations of our country and government. The history of the site actually goes back to the turn of the 20th century, when the Army Corp of Engineers dredged a portion of the Potomac River. During the first World War, the site’s Main Navy and Munitions Buildings were built as temporary (but sturdy) barracks. President Richard Nixon was actually responsible for the demolition of the buildings in 1970, as well as the park which took its place. The 50 acres of the Gardens provide ample room for the travelling DC visitors to stretch out and enjoy themselves. Sit and let the waves of history wash over you, as the wide-open sky above echoes the expansive freedoms of the Constitution. The location also makes it the perfect starting, midway, or ending point for a day tour of the monuments, especially if you have a picnic meal to enjoy at the same time.
